Perl is a widely used scripting language which is regarded as being one of the most practical languages on the web. It is feature-rich and it is used to generate various web-based apps and CGI scripts. What differentiates Perl from most of the other languages out there is its support for modules - sets of commands for a particular task that can be included in a script by calling them i.e. you can write just one line within your script to get a module executed, instead of having the whole code that is already a part of the module anyway. Because Perl is compatible with various other languages and it features a lot of functions depending on what a given application can do, it's used by lots of well-known companies - the BBC, Craigslist, The Internet Movie Database (IMDB), cPanel, and many others.
