Server Side Includes (SSI) is a basic server-side language, which enables you to include text from a given source inside a web page. In the most typical situation, the text from a single file is integrated in a second one, giving a website the feeling that it is dynamic. For instance, if your site is comprised of 10 webpages, five of them can easily contain the content of some file, for example horoscope.txt. As soon as you alter this text file, the modified content will appear on all of the five pages, which will enable you to bring up to date your site much easier than if you had to modify part of all five web pages. Server Side Includes is at times utilized to incorporate the output of simple commands, scripts or functions as well - a hit counter that's displayed on the site, the current date and time or the visitor's IP address. Any webpage that uses SSI should have a special extension - .shtml.

Server Side Includes in Cloud Hosting

SSI is enabled for each individual domain name or subdomain by putting an .htaccess file in the website folder with just a few lines of code. Certainly, you do not have to be a programmer for that because the needed code can be copied from the Help post that we have related to Server Side Includes. If you wish to employ this function for your website, it's important to rename your website files from .html to .shtml plus you've got to double-check if all links on your site point to the modified names.

Server Side Includes in Semi-dedicated Hosting

It won't take you more than a moment to enable Server Side Includes if you have a semi-dedicated server plan with us. When you decide to activate this function, you need to set up an .htaccess file in the main folder for the domain name or subdomain in which you would like SSI to be active. In this file, you have to copy some code, which you'll get in the FAQ article that we have devoted to SSI. You can get the latter inside the Help section of your Hosting Control Panel, so you do not need any previous experience with such things. The only 2 things you need to deal with are renaming all of pages that will utilize Server Side Includes from .html to .shtml and editing all of the links on your website, so they lead to the updated files.
